The time it takes for a plumber to fix a burst pipe can vary based on several factors, including the severity of the burst, the location of the pipe, and the plumber's experience. Generally, here’s a rough estimate:

  • Assessment: 30 minutes to 1 hour to diagnose the problem.

  • Repair: 1 to 3 hours for the actual repair work, depending on the complexity.

In total, you might expect the entire process to take anywhere from 1.5 to 4 hours. However, if additional issues are discovered or if the plumbing system is particularly complex, it could take longer. Always consult with a plumber for a more accurate estimate based on your specific situation.

Water Line Basics

The water main, or also called water service line, runs underground from the water meter near the street to your home or business. It supplies potable (safe to drink) water throughout the home or building and outdoor spigots. Property owners are responsible for their water line from their home to the meter at the street.

There are many types of pipe that have been used over the past 100 years for main water service lines. As the quality of pipe has evolved, older types of pipe are no longer used. Blue polybutylene was commonly used in the 1970s through the 1990s and is known to fail by simply breaking or cracking. Newer, longer lasting pipe that we primarily use is HDPE for High Density Poly-Ethylene. Other types of water pipe used for domestic water lines are copper and pvc, however copper is more expensive than HDPE. HDPE is easier to use because of its flexibility.

Turn off the water supply. You may only need to cut out half an inch of the pipe for a pinhole leak. However, for a bigger leak, mark 1 inch (2.5 cm) of the pipe on either side of the damage and cut them out with a pipe slice or pipe cutter. After this, you can repair or replace the pipe and turn the water back on.
